How to Care for Your Tattoo

Keep it clean, keep it light, and do not overwork the skin while it heals.

1

Wash Your Hands

Always start by washing your hands thoroughly before touching your new tattoo. This helps prevent bacteria from being introduced to the area.

2

Clean the Tattoo

  • Use lukewarm water and an antibacterial soap such as Dial.
  • Gently lather the tattoo instead of scrubbing it.
  • Rinse carefully and avoid spraying high-pressure water directly onto the tattoo.
3

Dry the Tattoo

  • Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel.
  • Do not rub.
  • Let it air dry for about 5 minutes until it is dry to the touch.
4

Moisturize

  • Days 1–4: Apply a very light amount of Aquaphor. Your tattoo should look hydrated, not greasy.
  • If it looks greasy, you used too much. If it feels dry, apply a little more.
  • Days 5–14: Switch to a fragrance-free lotion like Aveeno or Lubriderm.
  • Apply lotion 3–4 times daily to help prevent drying and cracking.
5

Repeat the Routine

Wash, dry, and moisturize the tattoo 3 times daily for the first 4 days. After that, continue applying fragrance-free lotion as needed for the following 2 weeks.
