Common Questions
These answers cover the questions most clients ask before booking or coming in.
Booking & Walk-Ins
Do you take walk-ins?
Yes. We welcome walk-ins based on artist availability. If you want something same-day, call ahead or stop in and we’ll let you know what’s open.
Do I need an appointment for a custom tattoo?
For larger, more detailed, or fully custom work, booking ahead is the best option. It gives your artist time to plan the design and reserve enough tattoo time.
How do I request a quote?
Send us your idea along with placement, approximate size, preferred style, and any reference images you have. The more clear your request is, the more accurate we can be.
Can I choose a specific artist?
Absolutely. If you already know which artist you want to work with, let us know when you reach out and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Pricing & Deposits
What is the shop minimum?
Our shop minimum is $100.
What are your hourly rates?
Our hourly rate ranges from $100/hour to $150/hour depending on the artist.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. Booking an appointment requires a $50 non-refundable deposit. Deposits must be paid in person by cash or card.
Does my deposit go toward the tattoo?
Yes. All deposits go toward the final cost of your tattoo.
How is my appointment date set?
After a brief consultation, an agreed-upon appointment date will be set.
Can you quote me exactly before I come in?
We can usually give you a solid estimate once we know the concept, placement, size, and style. Final pricing can shift if the design changes or the scope grows.
Cover Ups
Do you do cover ups?
Yes, we do tattoo cover ups. If you are thinking about a cover up, it is best to come in and speak directly with an artist so we can look at the existing tattoo and talk through the best options.
Consultations
Do you offer consultations?
Yes. Consultations are always free and are best done in person. In some cases, consultations can also be done over the phone depending on the project. If you are not sure, give us a call first.
Piercings
Do you offer body piercing?
No. We do not offer body piercing.
Before Your Appointment
How should I prepare for my tattoo?
- Get a full night of sleep if you can.
- Eat beforehand and stay hydrated.
- Wear comfortable clothing that gives access to the tattoo area.
- Bring your ID and any final reference images you want your artist to see.
Can I bring a friend with me?
Usually yes, but space can be limited depending on how busy the shop is. Contact us ahead of time if you’re unsure.
Does getting tattooed hurt?
Everyone experiences it differently. Placement, session length, and your own pain tolerance all matter. Most clients say it’s manageable, especially when they come in rested and fed.
Can I make changes to my design?
Small adjustments are usually no problem. Bigger concept changes may require more design time, so the earlier you communicate them, the better.
Healing & Aftercare
How do I take care of my new tattoo?
Keep it clean, dry it gently, and moisturize lightly. For full instructions, follow the aftercare sheet provided by Howell Tattoo and visit our aftercare page.
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Surface healing usually happens over the first couple of weeks, but deeper healing can take longer. Be gentle with it while the skin settles.
What should I avoid while it heals?
- Do not pick or scratch it.
- Do not over-apply ointment or lotion.
- Avoid soaking it while healing.
- Keep it clean and protect it from unnecessary irritation.
What if I have a question during healing?
Reach out to the shop directly. It is always better to ask than guess when it comes to healing.
